EMS University is evaluating Metro Vancouver as a potential location for emergency medical training. British Columbia's EMS system, operated by BC Emergency Health Services (BCEHS), employs over 4,000 paramedics provincewide. Vancouver and the Lower Mainland represent the largest concentration of EMS career opportunities in Western Canada.
Metro Vancouver is Canada's third-largest metropolitan area with over 2.6 million residents. British Columbia has faced a well-documented paramedic staffing crisis, with BCEHS reporting hundreds of unfilled positions across the province. The Lower Mainland is the epicenter of this demand.
Metro Vancouver's 2.6 million residents are spread across 21 municipalities from West Vancouver to Langley. The region also welcomes over 10 million visitors annually, including cruise ship passengers departing from Canada Place, driving consistent EMS call volumes year-round.
BC Emergency Health Services (BCEHS) is the provincial ambulance service and the primary EMS employer. Municipal fire departments (Vancouver Fire & Rescue Services, Surrey Fire Service, Burnaby Fire Department) also respond to medical calls as first responders. Private event medical companies serve the region's busy concert and sports venues.
In BC, the career path runs from Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) to Primary Care Paramedic (PCP) to Advanced Care Paramedic (ACP). EMR certification is also a prerequisite for many fire departments. Vancouver's growing population ensures sustained demand across all EMS certification levels.
EMS University is actively exploring the possibility of offering emergency medical training in Metro Vancouver. Any future program would need to meet the licensing standards set by the Emergency Medical Assistants Licensing Board (EMALB) under the BC Ministry of Health.
Important Notice: Emergency medical training is not currently being offered in Vancouver by EMS University. We are researching EMALB licensing requirements, evaluating clinical placement opportunities with BCEHS and Lower Mainland hospitals, and assessing the feasibility of offering accredited EMR or PCP training in BC. No timeline has been set. Join the interest list for updates.
Our team is researching EMALB program accreditation standards, evaluating partnerships with hospitals like Vancouver General (VGH), St. Paul's, and Royal Columbian, and assessing training facility options in the Metro Vancouver region.
Any EMS training program in British Columbia must be licensed by the Emergency Medical Assistants Licensing Board (EMALB) and comply with the Emergency Health Services Act. Program graduates must pass the EMALB provincial licensing examination.
Vancouver and the Lower Mainland offer diverse EMS career paths, from entry-level Emergency Medical Responder positions to Advanced Care Paramedic roles with BCEHS, plus first-responder positions with municipal fire departments.
BC Emergency Health Services (BCEHS) operates all 911 ambulance transport in the province. Metro Vancouver stations handle the highest call volume in BC, with dispatch centers in Vancouver coordinating responses across the Lower Mainland.
